Cineworld Launch Aviator Style and Clip-on 3D Glasses
This has been a long time coming. When the Cineworld chain of multiplexes signed a deal with Look3D last year, the idea was they’d roll out a range of the company’s stylish 3D eyewear this January, right in the middle of Avatar’s herculean run. That would have been a great test bed for the specs, but for some reason it didn’t happen then.
But it has now. Aviator-style specs are retailing at £13 (not the once-touted £8), while the clip-ons for those who already wear glasses are just £4. In theory, these could silence a pair of oft-rehearsed complaints – ‘the glasses look silly’ and ‘I hate wearing glasses over my glasses’. To be honest, I’m not too sympathetic with the first of those complaints at all so hopefully there’s more to the Aviator-y ones than looks. They could well be rather more comfortable than the typical build, and if that’s the case, then I think they’ll sell a good few.
Here’s an image of the swanky specs as featured on the Cineworld website but – irony of ironies – you might need to pop your glasses on to see them properly.
Look3D have signed a licensing deal with RealD that will allow them to improve on the scratch-resistance and durability of the lenses used, but there’s no indication that these specs use the beefed up variants.
At the moment, only the Cineworld sites at Crawley, Didsbury, Glasgow Renfrew, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Wandsworth are selling the specs though a full nationwide roll-out will come if these are a success. Then, I think the next step should be prescription adjusted 3D glasses. Then contact lenses. Then we won’t need glasses at all. And finally we won’t even need eyes.
